The Indian Railways is planning to construct underground railway tracks along a crucial 40-kilometer stretch in the Siliguri corridor, known as the "Chicken's Neck." This $2.5 billion infrastructure investment will create six railway lines, four overground and two underground, positioned 20 to 24 meters below ground.
"This underground stretch is extremely important from a security point of view," explains Chetan Kumar Srivastava, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway. The project connects India's northeastern states with the rest of the country through a narrow corridor flanked by Nepal and Bangladesh.

Chief Administrative Officer Hitendra Goyal highlighted the project's scope: "Once completed, this stretch will effectively have six railway lines, significantly enhancing logistical resilience and strategic mobility."
