Recovery operations underway at Gbi Wegbe bridge following serious truck accident in Hohoe municipality

A serious accident occurred at the Gbi Wegbe bridge in Ghana's Hohoe municipality on Saturday night, September 13, 2025, when a Kia truck carrying salt plunged into the water, resulting in multiple injuries and ongoing recovery challenges.

Emergency Response and Rescue Operation

The incident, which took place around 10 PM, left four individuals injured, with two sustaining severe injuries. Similar to the swift response seen in recent infrastructure developments in northern Ghana, local authorities and community members quickly mobilized for rescue operations.

"Around 10 pm on Saturday, September 13, we were informed that a vehicle plunged into the water. We gathered the youth immediately and conducted rescue operations," stated Zikpuitor Prosper Hayibor, a local traditional leader in Wegbe.

Recovery Challenges

Despite coordinated efforts reminiscent of recent strategic interventions in Ghana's infrastructure sector, attempts to retrieve the submerged vehicle have proven challenging. The Hohoe municipal assembly deployed a caterpillar machine, but initial recovery efforts were unsuccessful.

Community Response and Safety Concerns

The incident has sparked discussions about infrastructure safety, particularly following recent developments in Ghana's transportation network. As Ghana continues to modernize its infrastructure, community members are calling for immediate assessment and potential reconstruction of the bridge.

Previous Safety Incidents

This accident follows other recent transportation safety concerns in Ghana, including an incident at Tema Free Zones where citizens intervened to prevent a potential accident involving an insecurely fastened container. The growing public awareness of infrastructure safety highlights the need for enhanced monitoring and maintenance protocols.
