LemFi Buys Wealth8: A New Era for Diaspora Wealth
LemFi has officially acquired UK-based investment platform Wealth8 after securing approval from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This strategic move allows LemFi's 2 million+ cross-border customers to access wealth management and investment products, directly tackling the ethnic wealth gap by enabling diaspora communities to build long-term generational wealth alongside their remittance habits.
Why is LemFi moving from remittances to wealth management?
For decades, the financial journey for Africans in the diaspora followed a familiar script. You build a life in a new country, support family back home, save what you can, and try to establish a credit footprint. But the most crucial step, investing for long-term security, remained out of reach for many. LemFi is determined to change that narrative. By adding Wealth8 to its ecosystem, LemFi transitions from a platform that simply moves money across borders into a comprehensive financial-life platform. This is the Africa that moves forward, shifting from mere survival to sustainable prosperity.
The momentum has been building. In 2025, LemFi launched its Instant Access Savings Account powered by ClearBank, offering promotional rates up to 5.00% AER. It was a deliberate pivot from helping customers move money to helping them grow it. But savings alone do not build lasting wealth. Investing is the engine of compounding returns, and it is precisely this rung on the financial ladder that newcomers are most excluded from.
What does the data say about the ethnic wealth gap?
The opportunity before us is massive. While investing drives long-term wealth in the UK, participation is heavily skewed. Most UK adults holding more than £10,000 in investible assets, roughly 61%, keep at least three-quarters of it in cash rather than investments. The barriers are highest for communities that have arrived from abroad.
Research from the London School of Economics published in late 2025 confirmed that the UK's ethnic wealth gap has widened over the past decade. Runnymede Trust data reveals a stark reality: for every £1 of wealth, several minority communities hold as little as 10 to 20 pence. This gap stems from unequal income and a lack of access to the assets that compound into wealth over time. We cannot close this gap through hard work alone; we need access to the right financial tools.
How does Wealth8 make investing accessible?
Wealth8 was built to shatter these barriers. The platform's mission is to make investing simple, affordable, and accessible to communities that mainstream platforms have ignored. They offer diversified portfolios with minimum investments as low as £8. Under LemFi's umbrella, this mission scales up dramatically. Wealth8's investment expertise will now combine with LemFi's technology and massive customer base, empowering a whole new wave of global Africans to become investors.
Ridwan Olalere, co-founder and CEO of LemFi, emphasized the logical evolution of the company's services.
