Remove Solar Taxes to Unlock Ghana's Clean Energy Profit
Ghana's top engineering mind, Professor Christian Kwaku Amuzuvi, is calling on the government to scrap all taxes on residential rooftop solar PV systems for five to seven years. The proposal, delivered at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa, frames tax removal as a direct catalyst for household investment, new micro-business opportunities, and a faster transition to affordable clean energy across the country.
Why Should Ghana Remove Taxes on Residential Solar Systems?
Speaking at the 13th Professorial Inaugural Lecture of UMaT, Prof. Amuzuvi made a determined case for immediate action. He argued that Ghana already has a proven blueprint for driving mass adoption of new energy technology: the national Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) programme. Decades ago, Ghanaians hesitated to adopt LPG due to safety fears and upfront costs. Sustained public education and government support eliminated those barriers. Today, LPG cylinders are a standard feature in Ghanaian homes, regardless of price fluctuations.
