Volta Region Gets Major Power Boost: 206 Communities to Be Connected
In a significant step toward universal electricity access, Ghana's Energy and Green Transition Minister, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has launched a major electrification project that will bring power to 206 communities across 18 districts in the Volta Region. The initiative, part of the government's Rural Electrification Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative (REIP), is expected to transform lives, create jobs, and drive socio-economic growth.
Speaking at the launch at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), Dr Jinapor emphasized the project's role in poverty reduction and development. 'Access to reliable electricity is not a luxury; it is a foundation for business, education, and innovation,' he said. The project, undertaken by Byes and Ways Limited, is slated for completion within six months.
Strengthening Transmission: New Line and Substation for Ho
The minister also announced major upgrades to the region's power grid, including a new 161kV transmission line from Asiekpe to Ho. This line will improve voltage stability and supply reliability across the region. Additionally, a new substation in Ho will provide the regional capital with a dedicated transformer, easing pressure on existing infrastructure and ensuring more dependable power for homes and businesses.
Tilt Engineering Limited is handling the transmission and substation work, with completion expected in 12 months. CEO Ing. Samuel Adjidjornu confirmed that preliminary activities are already underway, with teams conducting route surveys and engaging communities along the corridor.
Addressing Overbilling Concerns
Dr Jinapor also responded to consumer complaints about overbilling. He assured the public that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) will independently investigate all reports. 'Where faulty meters are found to be the cause, they will be replaced,' he stated, reinforcing the government's commitment to transparency and fair billing.

The launch was followed by a handover ceremony at the GRIDCo Substation, attended by key players including GRIDCo CEO Ing. Frank Asirifi Otchere, ECG Deputy Managing Director David Asamoah, and chiefs from the Volta Regional House of Chiefs. Their presence underscored the collaborative spirit driving this initiative.
