Mahama to Break Ground on Seven-Storey Airport Car Park and Hotel Complex by End of August
Accra's Kotoka International Airport is set for a major upgrade. President John Dramani Mahama will cut the sod before the end of August 2026 for a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and airport hotel complex. This project promises to transform the passenger experience and boost Ghana's aviation sector.
The Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, shared the news during a site viewing on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. She explained that the project is part of GACL's broader strategy to expand airport infrastructure, increase parking capacity, and enhance commercial and hospitality services.
What the Project Includes
The complex will feature two underground parking levels, a ground-floor shopping mall with retail outlets, restaurants, food courts, and office spaces. Five additional levels above the mall will be dedicated to vehicle parking. This design aims to solve the chronic parking shortage at the airport while creating new revenue streams.
Opare noted that the contractor has already taken over the site and is mobilizing. 'Hoarding of the project area will begin shortly, and by the end of this month, God willing, we expect His Excellency the President to cut the sod for the official commencement of construction,' she said.
Hotels and Observatory for Travelers and Visitors
The upper section of the complex will house two hotels with distinct roles. One will be a luxury hotel open to the general public, offering premium accommodation. The other will be a budget airport hotel reserved for passengers affected by flight cancellations, delays, or grounded aircraft. 'The budget hotel will be accessible only from within the airport and will mainly cater for passengers who require temporary accommodation after flight disruptions,' Opare explained.
An observatory will be built between the two hotels. Visitors can watch aircraft take-offs and landings under a controlled booking system. 'We are creating an observatory where people can watch aircraft take off and land. Access will be by booking so that we can manage visitor numbers and schedule visits around flight movements,' she added.
Timeline and Economic Impact
Opare expressed confidence that the project will be completed within 24 months after construction begins. 'If all goes according to plan, the project should be completed within 24 months and be ready for commissioning,' she said.
