World Cup Makes History: Almiron Red Card Ushers In New Era Of Transparency
Miguel Almiron of Paraguay became the first footballer ever sent off for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent during a World Cup match, marking a historic enforcement of FIFA's new transparency rule designed to combat abusive language on the pitch.
Why Did Miguel Almiron Receive A Red Card For Covering His Mouth?
The incident happened during Paraguay's group match against Turkey in San Francisco. Almiron, the 32-year-old former Newcastle United winger, obscured his mouth with his hand while speaking to Turkey's Mert Muldur. Muldur immediately alerted an official standing nearby. After a video assistant referee (VAR) review, referee Ivan Barton from El Salvador announced the red card to the crowd, just before half-time with Paraguay leading 1-0.
Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro accepted the decision without complaint, confirming that Almiron apologised to his teammates for the mistake.
