Ghana’s Future on the Move: 100 Youth Head to Accra for Heavy-Duty Machine Training
In a bold step to tackle youth unemployment, about 100 young people from Gomoa West are heading to Accra to learn heavy-duty machine operations. The initiative, led by Captaine Blessed Godsbrain Smart, NDC parliamentary aspirant for the constituency, is already changing the narrative about what young Ghanaians can achieve.
The orientation ceremony, held on October 6, 2026, at the forecourt of the Paramount Chief’s palace in Gomoa Ajumako, marked the departure of the second cohort of trainees. They will train at the Chafas Institute of Practical Studies (CHIPS) in Accra, with all logistics and accommodation covered by the programme.
Why Skills Training Matters for Gomoa West
Captaine Smart, who is not yet the MP for the area, explained that poverty and lack of jobs remain critical challenges in the constituency. He believes skills training is one of the most practical ways to reduce unemployment and create lasting change.
“During elections, we rely on you to vote, but after elections, certificates are demanded. This training is not like that. Once you have completed Senior High School, regardless of your results, you are qualified,” he told the gathering.
No Certificates Required, Just Passion to Learn
The programme is open to all SHS graduates, with no strict certification requirements. Smart emphasised that a sound mind and a passion to learn are the only prerequisites. His vision is to train about 200 indigenes across the constituency in heavy-duty machinery operations.
“When our kith and kin are skilled, at least the contractor working on our road can employ some of our people to operate a roller or grader,” he said, drawing applause from the crowd.
Women in Heavy-Duty Machinery: A New Frontier
Smart also made a strong case for including women in the initiative. He noted that he has never seen a woman from Gomoa operating heavy-duty machinery or driving an articulated truck. “It would gladden my heart to see a young lady from Gomoa drive an articulated truck into the constituency,” he said.
He added that such an achievement would not only provide employment but also inspire other young women, potentially reducing teenage and unplanned pregnancies in the communities.
Logistics Covered, Trainees Urged to Be Serious
Addressing the trainees, Smart assured them that accommodation and other logistics have been fully paid for. “Yours is to be serious and justify the investment made,” he said, urging them to take the training seriously as a stepping stone to a better life.
He also rejected the perception that people from Gomoa are lazy, blaming lack of opportunities and bad leadership for the current situation. “With me as your MP and the overwhelming support I see today, we will change the story and narrative surrounding Gomoa West,” he assured.
What This Means for Ghana’s Youth and Economy
This initiative is a clear example of how local leadership can drive economic growth. By equipping youth with practical skills, Gomoa West is positioning itself to benefit from infrastructure projects and the broader construction sector. It also aligns with national efforts to promote technical and vocational education as a pathway to decent work.
As the trainees head to Accra, the hope is that they will return not just with certificates, but with the confidence and competence to transform their communities. For Ghana, this is a small but significant step toward a future where skills, not just academic credentials, open doors.
